They Were the Best and the Worst of Times: Reflections Illuminate Emerging Adults’ Sexual Experiences

Abstract Introduction Human sexuality courses are offered at most universities. Students often bring a breadth of experiences and need for emotional processing these narratives into as it relates to course content. The purpose this study was expand research exploring emerging adults’ be inclusive positive stories. Methods Guided by semi-structured questionnaire, 113 students from two USA universities reflected in 2017 on their sexual history using an established educational activity asking about “best” “worst” experiences. Results Qualitative analysis resulted five themes describing “Best” four “Worst” one theme with dual meaning. “Best of” highlighted student romance, beyond intercourse, intimacy, listening , safety . “Worst physical health factors, alcohol and/or substance use/misuse exploitation victimization feelings shame meaning firsts emerged both best worst of. Conclusions Findings suggest that human must consider students’ lived Further, we propose call-to-action clinically trained mental professionals, such social workers, educators. Policy Implications Universities should incorporate education policies acknowledge who collection stories learning spaces. Centering student’s voice also would support campus programs, policies, interventions benefit students. Finally, guide professional accreditation work university programs include wellness content the curricula warranted.
